On Thursday, DGMO Lt General Ranbir Singh told reporters that the strikes were targeted against suspects of preparing to infiltrate into the part of Kashmir it controls, the army’s director general of military operations said. The strikes were launched on Wednesday based on “very specific and credible information that some terrorist units had positioned themselves to infiltrate”.
Singh said the strikes had caused significant casualties, and that he had he had called his Pakistani counterpart to inform him of the operation.
An army source said that the strikes were launched across the Line of Control, or de facto border between the two countries.
The strikes were in retaliation to the September 18 attacks in the Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir that claimed the life of 18 soldiers. Singh also confirmed that India had damning proof of Pakistani involvement in the attacks. India had decided to give consular access to all the evidence collected by Indian agencies.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Inter Services Public Relations has claimed that India carried out the strikes on the Pakistani side of the LoC in the Bhimber, Hotspring, Kel & Lipa sectors.
Pakistan said that at least two of their soldiers were killed in the firing along the border, but dismissed India’s claim that the fatalities were a result of surgical strikes conducted in Pakistan.
Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif has condemned the attacks while saying that Pakistani Army would thwart any attempt of “undermining it’s sovereignty”.
