Out of the eight transgender candidates who took the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) 2017, five have cleared the exam, the result of which was announced by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Friday. NEET is an all-India examination for admission to MBBS and BDS courses.
As per the Press Trust of India report, a senior CBSE official said that this year eight transgender candidates had applied for NEET and out of which five have qualified the exam. Last year, nine candidates from the transgender category have applied for the NEET exam out of which three have cleared it.
The Supreme Court in its historic judgement on April 2014, created the “third gender” status for transgenders. A bench of Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan and A.K. Sikri ordered the centre as well as the state government to treat transgenders as socially and educationally backward classes so as to enable them to get reservations in jobs and education.
11,38,890 medical aspirants gave the exam this year which was conducted on May 7. Out of those who sat for the exam, 6,11,539 cleared it. Around 9,13,033 took the exam in English, whereas, 1,20,663 students gave the exam in Hindi.

Punjab’s Navdeep Singh is declared as the topper in this year’s NEET. He scored 697 out of 700 marks in the exam. Madhya Pradesh’s Archit Gupta and Manish Mulchandani secured second and third position respectively. They both scored 695 marks in the exam. The fifth spot was secured by Abhishek Dogra, who hails from Maharashtra and is also emerged as the Maharashtra’s topper.

There was a delay in the announcement of NEET result this year, the result was expected to be declared on June 8. But many candidates filed the petition in the Madras High Court demanding the cancellation of the exam and claimed that there was a difference in the question paper after which High Court put a stay on the announcement of NEET result. Later CBSE approached Supreme Court which directed that NEET results should be announced by June 26.
