When the Supreme Court on Friday announced its verdict upholding the death sentence of all the four convicts in the December 16 gangrape and murder case, Nirbhaya’s mother broke down while the courtroom stood up to clap. While announcing the verdict, the apex court called the case a ‘rarest of rare’ and said that no relief should be provided to all the four convicts.
Reacting to the verdict, Nirbhaya’s father said, “It’s a victory for my family, I am very happy with the judgement”. The four convicts – Akshay, Pawan, Vinay Sharma and Mukesh – had challenged the Delhi High Court order which had sentenced them to death. Turning down the appeal of the 4 convicts, the top court said that they are upholding the death sentence ‘taking the serious injuries, the severe nature of the offence committed by the convicts’ into consideration. It also added that the details of the incident were ‘barbaric’.
Justice Bhanumati said that there should be a systematic education of children to ensure how they will give respect to women.Meanwhile, AP Singh, lawyer of the convicts on the verdict said: “Justice not done, we will file review petition after reading the order”.
