No idea how much currency printed post demonetisation: RBI

The RBI admitted this while replying to the RTI application filed by Mumbai-based activist Anil Galgali.

In a shocking revelation, India’s central bank RBI has said that it has no idea about how much currency has been printed post the demonetisation move announced by the central government. The RBI admitted this while replying to the RTI application filed by Mumbai-based activist Anil Galgali.

The activist through RTI sought an information about printing of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 2,000 notes between November 9 and 19.

“The information sought is not available with us,” RBI said in its reply.

The RBI also refused to provide information regarding distribution of notes by banks from November 9 to 19, 2016.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 8, 2016 announced the scrapping of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes with effect from midnight.

In his first televised address to the nation, Modi said people holding notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 can deposit the same in their bank and post office accounts from November 10 till December 30.

He had said that government took this step to curb black money and put a complete stop on terror funding.

Following the announcement, there were huge crowds outside ATMs and banks across the country as people lined up to withdraw/deposit currency.
