‘No sex, no meat during pregnancy booklet in circulation since 2013 during UPA govt’

The Ayush Ministry said that the booklet has been in distribution through the units of the previous Department of AYUSH and CCRYN since 2013

A day after the ministry of Ayush faced flak for its booklet which states that pregnant women should not eat meat, should say no to sex after conception and avoid bad company, the Modi ministry has hit back. The ministry has claimed that the booklet was in circulation since 2013 in the regime of the previous UPA government.

The ministry also said that the suggestions that the opposition parties are now terming as “sanskari” and “regressive”, were actually made by the UPA government

A report in the Indian Express quotes a clarification by the Ministry which says: “This publication has been in distribution through the units of the erstwhile Department of AYUSH and CCRYN since 2013. The report that it was released by the Minister of State (IC) for AYUSH in recent past is incorrect.”

There was widespread criticism after reports suggested that a booklet by the ministry has advised pregnant women to abstain from sex, quit meat and have pure thoughts for healthy babies. The book also suggested that the women should read life stories of great personalities during their pregnancy.

Reports suggested that the booklet called ‘Mother and Child Care’, which gives this ‘advice’ was issued by Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN) which is funded by the government. The booklet was said to be released by MoS (Independent Charge) Shripad Naik ahead of the International Day for Yoga on June 21.

Doctors had come forward to rubbish the claims of the booklet ‘Mother and Child Care’ claiming that there is no rationale behind the recommendations of the government research body.
