In a move to encourage children to take care of their parents, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in Assam announced that the salary of government employees who failed to take care of their elderly parents will be deducted.
“Employees working in the government, state PSUs and companies will be expected to take care of their elderly parents in a desirable manner. In case of non-compliance, the proposed legislation would mandate that a certain portion of the salary of such employees would be deducted to be given to their respective parents,” a new legislation in the Assam Assembly said.
The legislation was part of the first full Budget presented by the government in the Assembly. Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma paid utmost attention to farmers, youth, and women, besides announcing new strategies for infrastructure and rural development.
He also announced interest-free crop loans to farmers. Giving a push to cashless economy, he proposed a Rs 5,000 incentive to all tea garden workers for the opening of bank account to receive wages following the demonetisation decision.
“We saw a great opportunity to push a less-cash economy at the heights of most challenging times of demonetisation. Prime Minister Narendra Modiji’s historic decision to demonetise gave us an opportunity to break ‘weekly cash cycle’ and bring the banking system to the doorsteps of the tea gardens,” he said.
