For seven years in a row, a man in Delhi – Ajit Kar- posed as a lawyer in the Dwarka court complex. He wasn’t just present at the court, he even argued nearly 55 cases over the years.
The case came to light after one of the lawyers could not find the chamber where Kaur worked. When the lawyer informed the Bar Association, it was found that Kar’s name was not registered in any Delhi court.
A case was filed by the police after one of Kar’s clients registered a complaint against him. The client, Ankur Kumar, had approached Kar to fight a case on behalf of his sister. He told Kumar that he was a criminal lawyer and even convinced him that he would win the case for his sister. Kumar paid Rs 50,000 as advance and asked for the remaining amount on completion of the case.
The imposter was arrested on Saturday and a case under sections 419 and 420 of the IPC has been filed. The Delhi Police is now investigating the cases that have been argued by Kar in the past.
It is said that Kar decided to pose as a lawyer after he realised that the fees for legal services were exorbitant. From 2010, when he first came to court, he started arguing his own cases. He also started taking up others cases charging Rs 1 lakh per client.
Though embarrassed by the incident, Dwarka court secretary Rajeshwar Dagar said that since there are around 5,000 lawyers in the court premises, verifying every person’s identity is not possible.
