Not in race for Chief Ministership in Uttar Pradesh: Rajnath Singh

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on March 15 rubbished the media reports claiming that he is one of the main contenders for chief minister’s post in the Uttar Pradesh. The Home Minister clarified that he is not in the race. Earlier, media reports claimed that Rajnath Singh, who served as the Chief Minister for a little over one year between 2001 and 2002, was considered for the coveted post.

While talking to the media persons about his name being in the running for Uttar Pradesh CM, Rajnath said: “ It is unnecessary and futile.”

Since the saffron party led by Amit Shah achieved a thumping majority of 325 MLAs in the state, the names which are doing the rounds for UP’s next Chief Minister include minister of state for railways Manoj Sinha, Union home minister Rajnath Singh, state BJP chief Keshav Prasad Maurya and firebrand MP Yogi Adityanath.

However, the final decision on this will be taken by the BJP Parliamentary Board which is expected to meet later this week to finalise the name.

On March 11, the BJP scripted a historic win in Uttar Pradesh assembly elections with due credit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his aggressive campaign. The safforn party and its allies grabbed 325 seats out of 403 assembly seats. With this victory, the party is back in the power in the state after dry run of 15 long years.
