In the aftermath of the recent mob lynching in Jharkhand, citizens came out to protest against the rising attacks on minorities in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. Several Muslim organisations, activists and students joined hands to raise their voice against the killings. Not just in Delhi, simultaneous protests were organised in over 50 cities.
The incident happened on June 18 in Seraikela Kharsawan’s Dhatkidih village when the victim Tabrez Ansari was tied to a pole and beaten by a mob which accused him of theft. In the video of the incident that went viral, mob is seen forcing him to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Jai Hanuman’. The victim, on the other hand, is seen chanting and pleading with the mob to stop the assault. He was sent to judicial custody for theft where he complained of ill-health. He was later sent to a hospital where he was ‘declared dead on arrival’. Meanwhile, police have arrested 11 residents of Dhatkidih village and have suspended two police personnel.
