Now, Anti-Romeo squads in Gujarat too!

This is not the first time that anti-Romeo squad is being set up in the cities of Gujarat, back in 1999 it was the first state to form the squad.

In order to make cities safe for women, now Ahmedabad is also all set to launch anti-Romeo squad. However, the squad will be set up only in some cities of Gujarat like Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot and Vadodara and will come into force during festivals like Navratri when large number of women step out from their houses during night time.

This is not the first time that anti-Romeo squad is being formed in the cities of Gujarat, back in  1999 it was the first state to set up the squad. There will be 10 police officials in the squad that will include male and female police officers. The squad is likely to be launched on April 18.

Panna Momaya, ACP (women cell)  said, “Apart from taking prompt action on complaints against eve-teasers, we will also conduct flash mock drills at places frequented by teenagers and educate girls on how to tackle lumpen elements and seek police help by dialing helpline numbers.” As per records, the city police registers as many as 100 cases of eve-teasing every month.

Yogi Adityanath after taking the charge of the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh introduced the anti-Romeo squad in the state to ensure safety and to keep a check on eve-teasers. After the cases of unnecessary harassment from the squad came to light, CM chalked out guidelines for the squad.

Earlier, UP DGP, Javeed Ahmed had said, “Safety of ladies is the sole intent of the anti- Romeo squads and this should not be taken as moral policing. Through this squad, we are not trying to harass people but we are trying to take action against those who are harassing others.”
