As many as 121 seats went vacant this year in the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), even after seven rounds of counselling. Taking this year’s record into account, the number of empty seats in the IITs has touched a four-year high. There are 23 IITs which have a total number of 10,962 seats.
Among all the IITs, the maximum number of vacant seats were from IIT-BHU (Varanasi), second on the list is IIT -Dhanbad (Indian School of Mines) with 23 empty seats followed by IIT-Jammu (13) and IIT Kharagpur (9). In 2016, there were 96 seats that remained empty and 50 seats were vacant in 2015 as well as in 2014.
In the last four years, all the seats were filled up at IIT-Kanpur and IIT-Hyderabad and joining them this year if IIT -Jodhpur where all the seats have been occupied. In 2016, only one seat was left vacant at IIT Jodhpur. In 2017, only one seat is empty at IIT-Bombay, IIT-Madras, IIT-Palakkad, IIT-Ropar and IIT-Goa.
This year, the last round of counselling took place on July 29. IITs are planning to scrap courses which are not popular among engineering aspirants. This issue to discontinue unpopular courses will be discussed at a meeting of the Joint Admission Board (JAB) which will take place on August 20.
The Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry has asked the IITs to come up with the suggestions in order to address the situation, which also includes discontinuing unpopular courses.

Meanwhile, IIT Bombay (IIT-B) has emerged as the most preferred engineering college among the toppers of Joint Entrance Exam (JEE). Out of the top 100 JEE rank holders, 65 took admission in IIT Bombay. And among the courses, computer science is the first choice of the students. The second favourite among the students was IIT -Delhi.
