While the rest of the world was celebrating Women’s Day on Thursday, Hyderabad resident Reshma Sultana was suffering through the horrors of her husband’s fury. Reshma’s husband, Omer Pasha, had beaten her so brutally, that she landed up on a hospital bed. Her only crime? She had dared to switch off the Wi-Fi at night.
Irritated by her husband’s late-night internet surfing, Reshma had disconnected the Wi-Fi router at night. Little did she know, her actions were outrageous for her husband. Reportedly, Reshma had bruises on her face, arms and chest, and was rushed to Yashoda Hospital in Somajiguda.
While Pasha has been booked under IPC Sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 341 (wrongful restraint), and 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) following a complaint by Reshma’s mother, the victim, who is a mother of three, writhes in pain on her hospital bed. Is this the gender equality we hope for?
