Padmavati was initially supposed to release on December 1, however, following violent protests, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) withheld the film’s release. CBFC Chief Prasoon Joshi had even stated that he had not seen the film and expressed his agitation over the film’s private media screenings, despite “incomplete formalities” with the Censor Board.
Joshi had recently proposed a panel of historians and royals, including a member of the Mewar royal family Vishvaraj Singh, to assist with the certification of the film. Singh, however, in a letter dated December 22, stated that he had “strong reservations” about the film as it would “open a Pandora’s box of new and pointless discussions.”

Earlier, the Deepika Padukone-starrer had sparked a controversy for allegedly depicting a love-story between Rani Padmini (Padukone) and Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer Singh). Bhansali had defended the film, denying all such allegations about the Padmavati‘s controversial plot.
Following the emergence of such claims, the Rajput community resorted to widespread violence, even issuing death threats to director Bhansali and Padukone. Members of the community even took issue with the song “Ghoomar” elaborating that a Rajput Queen wouldn’t dance in public and expose her skin.
