Patients may suffer as doctors go on nationwide strike today

Doctors have called for a one-day strike to protest against increasing cases of violence against doctors across the country

In order to protest against the violence faced by fellow professionals, Delhi Medical Association (DMA) has called for a nationwide strike on June 6. More than a lakh doctors are likely to participate in the Dilli Chao Movement organised by the Indian Medical Association (IMA).

According to news reports, the protest march will start from Rajghat and end at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium. Due to the strike, a number private hospitals are expected to be hit as their OPSs are likely to remain closed. Hospitals including Apollo and Max have rescheduled their appointments for today in the wake of the strike.

However, the emergency department will be kept open. “The medical profession is facing one of its most difficult time. Both, doctors as well as patients, have to understand that the doctor–patient relationship is a sacred one and that the dignity of the profession should be maintained. Feeling that enough is enough that the IMA has given this clarion call, Dilli Chalo,” PTI quoted IMA National President KK Aggarwal as saying.

The IMA has also reportedly planned to start a signature campaign and will take signatures of thousands of doctors. It would later be sent to the Centre while demanding immediate action. A report in PTI further stated that the doctors would also launch a ‘pen-down Satyagraha’ movement where the doctors from across the country will not write any prescription between 10 am and 11 am on June 6. Empowering MBBS graduates, fair conduction of NEET exam, central anti-quackery law, and reimbursement of emergency services for the private sector are some of the demands kept forth by the doctors.
