Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 2 inaugurated country’s longest Chenani-Nashri Tunnel in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The 10.89 kilometre Chenani-Nashri road tunnel is not only India’s but is also the longest highway tunnel in Asia. Huge security has been deployed since Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting the state.
The tunnel project in Jammu and Kashmir is between Udhampur and Ramban part of the proposed widening of the NH-44 from Jammu to Srinagar. The tunnel is expected to save fuel worth nearly Rs 99 crore a year. Prime Minister inaugurated the country’s longest tunnel after attedning the closing ceremony of the Allahabad High Court’s 150th anniversary.

The Prime Minister is also expected to address a rally at Battal Ballian in Udhampur district. The tunnel will reduce the travel time between the two state capitals of Jammu and Srinagar by two hours. The distance from Chenani and Nashri will now be 10.9 kms (between two ends of the tunnel), instead of the existing 41 kms.
