Nitish Kumar, who is likely to seek inroads for JDU in Uttar Pradesh, is likely to make liquor ban a poll plank in the state

There is already a ban on liquor in Bihar, but will Uttar Pradesh be the next state to ban it? Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who took the decision in his state is likely to advise Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Singh to impose a liquor ban in the state.

As per reports, Nitish is likely to make the suggestion during his visit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi on May 12.

Nitish, who is likely to seek inroads for JDU in Uttar Pradesh, is likely to make liquor ban a poll plank in the state. He will be launching a campaign for the expansion of the party at an event in Pindra, nearly 30 km from Varanasi.

Nitish Kumar’s decision to ban liquor in Bihar has won him a lot of accolades. To spread awareness against liquor consumption, Nitish Kumar on January 21, 2016 led a landmark event in which a human chain was formed stretching for more than 11,000 kms across 38 districts. Three Isro satellites, four trainer aircraft, choppers and 40 drones were deployed to film the event which was claimed to be a record.

In September 2016, 1.20 crore families of students in Bihar had signed a document supporting prohibition of liquor in the state.

On several occasions, Nitish has been claiming that there has been a visible positive impact of the ban in Bihar. At an event in December, Nitish said the state is saving Rs 10,000 crore because of prohibition. “Liquor supporters predicted revenue losses to the tune of Rs 5000 crore, but I am happy that people are now saving Rs 10,000 crore.”
