Amid crackdown on slaughterhouses and activism of anti-Romeo squads, PM Modi asks UP MPs to focus on development

"The mandate is for development. We have to focus on development only. Good governance is mantra of development," Modi reportedly said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today cautioned the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs from Uttar Pradesh to focus on development and refrain from pressurising state government officials.

PM Modi’s remarks came during his meeting with parliamentarians from the state at his official residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg. He had called all the UP MPs for breakfast today.

BJP president Amit Shah also attended the meeting. The PM reportedly told the parliamentarians to refrain from transfer and posting of officials as it causes unnecessary pressure on state government.

All the MPs have been directed to focus on development of their region. “The mandate is for development. We have to focus on development only. Good governance is mantra of development,” PM Modi reportedly said at the meeting.

The BJP won 312 seats in the just concluded elections to the 403-member Uttar Pradesh assembly. The party has promised all round development in the state.

Winning UP again in 2019 is crucial for the BJP if it has to return to power at the Centre. The BJP had build a campaign against nepotism and underdevelopment of UP under the previous Akhilesh Yadav government.

With the party ruling at the centre and in the state, the party high command has cautioned its leaders0 against laxity that could cost it in the next election.
