MCD election results 2017: BJP set to win big, here are 10 highlights

BJP has taken a clear lead in the first hour of counting of votes. The party is leading in 45 seats in MCD North, 54 seats in South and 27 seats in East.

Counting of votes in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections is on. The election was held in 270 out of 272 wards on April 23. The early trends suggest that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is headed towards an overwhelming majority. Staging a comeback, the Congress has pushed Delhi’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to the third spot.

Though the Election Commission of India will declare the final results after 5 pm, the BJP is clearly winning these elections for third time in a row. The BJP has dominated the MCD for the last decade. In 2012, the party had won a majority in the MCD North and MCD East. In MCD South, the BJP was the largest party, but short of a majority, and partnered with Independents and others to gain control of the house.

Here are the top ten highlights of the MCD election results:

BJP is leading in all the municipal corporations of Delhi. It is heading towards a two-third majority.
BJP is leading in 186 wards, AAP 40 and Congress in 28 wards across Delhi.
After seeing the early trends, Yogendra Yadav, co-founder, Swaraj Abhiyan said, “BJP riding on Modi wave. There is anger against AAP. BJP enjoys favourable situation.”
According to reports, 27 MLAs are planning to quit the AAP, following an embarrassing defeat.
After the results, the AAP needs to undergo serious introspection if it wants to resist the onslaught from BJP in Delhi. It needs to rethink its strategy, else retaining Delhi in the 2020 Assembly election and expanding base in rest of India would be difficult.

After sensing a defeat, the Aam Aadmi Party once again blamed the EVMs for the loss.
The Congress was in rare consonance with the BJP in writing AAP’s obituary. For the Congress, a good performance today will mean a political revival in Delhi.
AAP is expected to launch a movement against the ‘misuse of EVMs’
The BJP has decided that it will not celebrate its victory in honour of the CRPF martys, who were killed by the Maoists in Chhattisgarh.
