DMK stages state-wide protest over Jallikattu row

The DMK party member and protestors along with party working president MK Stalin and Kanimozhi gathered near the Collector's office in Chennai.

A day after the Supreme Court rejected the plea to pass a judgment on Jallikattu before Pongal, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) criticised the Centre and the state government for this decision and called up a state-wide protest on January 13.

The DMK blamed the government for not taking appropriate steps to facilitate the event.

The DMK party members like Kanimozhi and Duraimurugan along with the protestors under the leadership of working president MK Stalin gathered near the Collector’s office in Chennai. Addressing the people gathered for the protest, Stalin said,”Jallikattu is our tradition but the Centre and state government has failed to get the permission conduct it on Pongal.”

Stalin demanded that the Centre should bring an ordinance on legalising the ‘bull-fighting’ sport and the state government should ensure the same.

Defying the ban imposed by Supreme Court, people in Kariselkulam in Madurai district conducted the Jallikattu. Around twenty-two game bulls and over 50 bull tamers participated in the event.

Youngsters of Chennai held a human chain protest on Marina Beach in Chennai. “We came in contact with each other in Social media decide to go for a silent march joining each other’s hand on the Marina,”said one of the protestors.

On January 12, Senior BJP leader, Subramanian Swamy asserted that President rule must be imposed in the state of Tamil Nadu if the people defy Supreme Court’s and still play the controversial sport, Jallikattu. He said that the central government must declare President’s rule if the state government failed to maintain law order.

Earlier, the Supreme Court of India had dismissed the plea just two days prior to Pongal on the same and said that it can’t allow the sport in the state to happen.

The SC said that the draft of the final judgment has been prepared but it is not possible to give a verdict before this Saturday when Pongal will be celebrated in Tamil Nadu.
