Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘raincoat’ remark over Dr. Manmohan Singh in Rajya Sabha has turned the opposition furious enough to create a ruckus in the house. The Congress Party has demanded the suspension of proceedings in both houses of Parliament while other parties in opposition have also extended their support to this demand.
Meanwhile, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi had demanded that PM Modi should apologise for his ‘ugly remark’ against Manmohan Singh.
Apart from Rahul, other Congress party leaders (House members) also condemned the statement made by the Prime Minister in the upper house of the parliament over one of their veteran leaders and former Premier of the nation.
Former finance minister P Chidambaram asserted that the language use by PM Modi was extremely bad. He added that Congress was “very very angry” over the remark and could have shouted down the PM during his address. Chidambaram said,”It is unbecoming of Prime Minister to use such a piece of language for his former counterpart.”
Kapil Sibal also took a dig at PM Modi over his statement and said,”He should know he is everybody’s PM, including ours. The post he occupies has dignity.” He called the PM arrogant and stated that he had chosen to speak when everyone else is done & then makes unsubstantial allegations.
On February 8, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while speaking on the motion of thanks to the President’s joint address to Parliament in Rajya Sabha, took a jibe at former prime minister Manmohan Singh saying, the former prime minister knows how to take a shower while wearing a ‘raincoat.’
The Prime Minister jibe was targetted at rampant corruption during erstwhile UPA regime helmed by Manmohan Singh.
“Not a single corruption charge against Manmohan Singh that too during the most corrupt government. The art of taking bath wearing raincoat in the bathroom can be learned from Mr. Singh”, he said.
Reacting to it, the Congress members shouted at the treasury benches and staged a walk out. They were joined by members of some other opposition parties.
On the protest staged by the Congress PM said if they breach decorum, they should then have the courage to listen. He also urged the opposition to join our fight against corruption.
