Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Anil Dhiman has won the bypoll in Bhoranj seat in Himachal Pradesh. He defeated his closest rival Parmila Devi from Congress by 8290 votes. The bypoll was necessitated by the death of BJP veteran and former education minister Ishwar Dass Dhiman. The saffron party had fielded his son Dr Anil Dhiman to fight the polls in his father’s seat.
The bypolls hold a greater significance for the BJP as the seat was held by Ishwar Dass Dhiman six times consecutively. A win in bypoll could also signal changing fortunes of the party after it was able to form its government in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur after recent polls.
Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh had already addressed a number of poll rallies in the constituency highlighting his government’s achievements. Former CM Prem Kumar Dhumal of the BJP and other party leaders had also held a number of meetings in the constituency.
The constituency has a total of 75,719 registered voters, 38,205 of them females and 37,514 males.
