Houses in Rajasthan are being painted with some extremely absurd messages to set their social profiles. Messages like “I am poor” or “I am extremely poor” are being painted outside houses of families to differentiate between the poor and the well-to-do families so as to get subsidised food grains. Not just one or two houses but the state government has painted over 1.5 lakh houses in Dausa district as it struggles to fix its public distribution system. As per reports, the exercise is being undertaken across the state by the Vasundhara Raje government.
Along with the ‘poor’ messages, the names of the family members and that they take ration from the government under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) have also been written outside the houses. Extremely discouraged by these markings, these family members say that they feel ashamed as people look at these messages and laugh on them. “It is as if the government is trying to provoke us,” a Dausa resident was quoted in News18.
Earlier, the Raje government ran into trouble for when it painted yellow patches on over 1 lakh houses of those belonging to below poverty line (BPL) families in Bhilwara town. Even the names and identification number of these beneficiaries was also painted on the walls.

Hitting out at the Rajasthan government, Congress alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is anti-poor. “If the state government provides them ration under the Food Security Act, it’s their legal right, and not a charity from the government. It proves the BJP governments at the Centre and in states are anti-poor,” Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said.
Congress leader DC Bairwa also added that the BJP has ensured that people are not able to avail the subsidies that they are entitled to.
However, the BJP has been quick to defend itself saying that the measure is just to ensure that the subsidies reach all beneficiaries.
