Prisoner Number 9234 – VK Sasikala – is behind bars at Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Jail in after she was convicted for four years in the disproportionate assets case. She had asked for an A-class cell, a table, a fan and home cooked food. She had also demanded a separate helper, a TV, mineral water, and a geyser. But all her VIP demands were set aside.
What she was offered instead was a small 10 feet by 8 feet cell, fitted with a bathroom. A partition separates her from her sister-in-law Elavarasi, who is also a co-accused in the case. Though she got a fan, blanket, and pillow, no other luxuries were given to her.
On the day when Sasikala went to jail, hardly anyone came to meet her apart from one fellow woman prisoner from a cell nearby. This prisoner was Cyanide Mallika, who is convicted of poisoning women for gold on temple premises. Mallika was earlier sentenced to death but her punishment was later reduced to imprisonment for life.
A resident of Bengaluru, Mallika killed 6 women from 1999 to 2007. She befriended lower-middle-class women who were facing domestic issues and later poisoned them to death to rob them of their belongings. She was arrested in 2007.
During her time in jail, Sasikala is expected to make candles for which she will be paid Rs 50 per day. Though there is no clarity on whether she would be doing the job.
As the news of Sasikala and Cyanide Mallika came out, Twitter has been taking a jibe at the coming together of Jayalalithaa’s aide and Jayalalithaa’s fan.
