The Bharatiya Janata Party has bagged a major victory in Nagpur Municipal corporation while the Congress is at a distant second spot. The win for the BJP was on expected lines as it is a stronghold of the party’s ideological parent Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The decision is also being seen as a positive reaction for Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis who belongs to Nagpur.
The Nationalist Congress Party and independent candidates also failed to make a huge mark in the elections. Around 53 per cent polling was registered in the election which was held on Tuesday. Apart from Nashik, other municipal corporations for went for polls were Mumbai, Thane, Ulhasnagar, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Solapur, Akola, Amravati and Nashik.
Apart from Mumbai, the BJP has done well in other major cities of Maharashtra. In Pune, the BJP pushed the ruling NCP to a poor second spot while the Shiv Sena, MNS and the Congress also could not give the BJP a tough fight in the state’s cultural and IT capital.
The 112-member civic body in Nashik too was bagged by the BJP. Though the party could not win the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation near Pune, as NCP emerged as the winner, the BJP came at the close second spot.
The 131-seat Thane Municipal Corporation along with the BMC went into Shiv Sena’s kitty.
