Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) broke all the voting records and recorded 7 per cent voter turnout in the civic polls. This is almost 13% more than what Chinchwad recorded in the year 2012. The voter turnout had been decreasing since 2002 elections but that 2017 municipal polls changed that trend.
However, a number of instances of violence was reported in the twin cities. As many as 773 candidates are battling it out with their fate lying in the hands of over 12 lakh voters. The polling will took place at 1,605 polling booths with 5,073 ballot boxes and a total of 10,710 employees being deployed for the Municipal polls. The candidates belonging to NCP, BJP, Shiv Sena, MIM are contesting for 128 ward seats.
The fight is considered to be strong between NCP and BJP. Congress has fielded 70 candidates. Shiv Sena is also likely to gain some seats. Some of the exit polls suggest that NCP is likely to emerge as a winner in PCMC civic polls.
As of now, BJP has won 70 seats while NCP is leading in 35 seats.
A voter turnout of 54.86% was recorded in the year 2012. The PCMC elections 2017 is considered to be one of the most unique elections because of the number of people who came out to cast their votes. This is the 7th Municipal polls. The first civic polls in Pimpri chinchwad was held in 1992 and recorded a voter turnout of 60.15%.
