Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday supported the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government waiving off farmer loans in Uttar Pradesh saying that he was happy with the decision taken in the state. “A partial relief for UP farmers, but a step in the right direction,” he said.
Praising the BJP, although not in as many words, Rahul also said that he was happy that the decision has finally been taken. “I’m happy BJP has finally been forced to see reason,” he tweeted. However, he did not forget to add that the Congress has “always supported loan waivers.”
He added that there should be no politics with our farmers who are suffering across the country. “The Central Govt must have a national response to the widespread distress & not discriminate amongst states,” he tweeted.

As per the government release, “Out of 2.30 crore farmers in the state, approximately 2.15 crore have land holdings between one and five acres. About 86.68 lakh of them are estimated to have taken crop loans from banks and they would be benefited.”
