In a regressive diktat by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Delhi, the warden has issued a notification asking the female students residing in the hostel to wear “fully covered decent western or Indian dresses.” The instruction has been rolled out for the institute’s House day that is being held on April 20.
“The House Day is on April 20th, 2017. The invitation cards for guests will be given at caretaker office during office hours. Further, all the residents are requested to wear a fully cover decent western or Indian dresses on House Day,” the circular states.
The notification signed by the warden has been up at Himadri hostel. As per a report in the Times of India, some students said that similar messages had been conveyed to them verbally in the past years as well.
However, this is the first time that a written notice has been issued. The women residents of the hostel have been taken aback by the circular.

The circular was shared with Pinjra Tod – a student group which fights for women rights in hostels, universities and colleges. In a post on Facebook, Pinjra Tod wrote: “Why do our administrations have this anxiety and desperate need to police what women wear? Every other day, there is some absurd diktat in one institution or another.”
