Cutting across political lines, Congress’s Bobbeeta Sharma and BJP’s Queen Ojha came together to dance to a Bihu tune at an event in Latashil in Guwahati on April 14. Both the candidates are campaigning for the Guwahati Lok Sabha Seat in Assam that will go to polls on April 23.
Former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi, who had accompanied Sharma to the event, told The Wire,
“Despite election campaigns, people cutting across political lines are here, enjoying Bihu. We are criticising each other in poll rallies. It should always be like this.”
BJP’s Ojha told reporters,
“Through song and dance, we enjoyed with people and I also wanted people to see what I am as a real person, not politician.”
The seven-day long Rongali Bihu festival marks the beginning of the Assamese New Year starting from April 13.
This comes amid the Election Commission temporarily barring political leaders including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, BSP supremo Mayawati, Samajwadi Party chief Azam Khan and Union Minister Menaka Gandhi for making “provocative political speeches”.
