Youth Murdered In West Bengal For “Doing BJP’s Politics”

The father named six alleged members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in his complaint, adding that Trilochan had received death threats before

The body of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) youth worker was found hanging by a tree in West Bengal’s Purulia district on Wednesday. The body of 28-year-old Trilochan Mahato was found close to his home in Supurdih village along with a note.

Scribbled on his white shirt, was a message in Bengali, presumably from the killer, which read: “This is for doing BJP’s politics at age 18. Been trying to kill you since the vote. Failed. Today you are dead,” NDTV reported. The same message was written on a piece of paper left at his feet.

As per a complaint filed by the deceased’s father, Hari Mahato, a mobile phone, wallet, slippers, a broken refill, a broken pen, along with Trilochan’s bicycle were found next to his body. According to The Indian Express, the father named six alleged members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in his complaint, adding that Trilochan had received death threats before.

Purulia SP Joy Biswas told The Indian Express, “We did not find external injury marks. He was wearing a T-shirt with a message written on it. A note with the same message was also found at the spot. We are investigating.” The police have registered a case of murder.

Accusing the TMC of the murder, BJP district president Vidyasagar Chakraborty said, “No one can be so dirty in politics like the TMC. We will fight this. Mahato was a BJP youth wing member and had actively worked during the panchayat polls.” Recently, the BJP had won majority in gram panchayat elections in Balarampur in Purulia district.

Trilochan’s father, in his police complaint, named six men he claimed had fought with his youngest son on 14 May during election at the poll booth in the village and threatened to kill him.

Taking cognisance of the incident, BJP President Amit Shah condemned the attack on Twitter.

Deeply hurt by the brutal killing of our young karyakarta, Trilochan Mahato in Balarampur,West Bengal. A young life full of possibilities was brutally taken out under state’s patronage. He was hanged on a tree just because his ideology differed from that of state sponsored goons. pic.twitter.com/nHAEK09n7R

However, TMC denied the allegations, adding that the death was an outcome of an “intra-party feud”. Balarampur TMC MLA Shantiram Mahato said, “There has been lot of groupism in their party (BJP) after the panchayat polls. Out of insecurity, they are blaming us. We want a proper probe and would like the CID to investigate the matter.”
