‘Punished’ by JNU for argument with Najeeb Ahmad, Ankit Roy fielded by ABVP for students’ union polls

Almost a year after Najeeb Ahmad went missing from the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus, police have still not been able to trace the student. Despite high-level probe into the case and the Delhi High Court handing it over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), there has been no update on where Najeeb might be.

However, in the middle of the controversy over his disappearance, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has fielded Ankit Roy as a candidate for the students’ union polls in the university. Ankit is one of the four activists who was transferred to another hostel after he was allegedly involved in a scuffle with Ahmad.

Ankit is one of the five candidates fielded by the ABVP as Councillors from the School of Language, Literature, and Cultural Studies. The university will on September 8 elect Councillors to represent various Schools and will also hold elections for the four central panel seats.

Ankit was among the students who were punished on December 8 last year by the JNU administration and had an “immediate hostel transfer”. A statement by the Office of the Dean of Students had then also recommended that a strong warning should be issued to these students against repeating such scuffles in future.

Many are opposing ABVP’s decision to give a ticket to Roy. Umar Khalid, PhD student at JNU who was arrested in February 2016 on charges of sedition, said that it was against the rules to let Ankit contest elections. “He was found guilty by the proctor’s board of assaulting Najeeb before his disappearance. Lyngdoh guidelines bar any student, who has been found guilty by the university authorities, from contesting elections,” he said.

However, ABVP’s Saurabh Sharma defended Ankit saying that he “has not been found guilty of any assault. Hostel change was done for maintaining peace and harmony.”
