Punjab police have started a pilot project to adopt using electric bikes for patrolling. The bikes come handy in crowded areas as they weave through traffic swiftly. The bike can reach sustained speeds of up to 25 km/hr without pedalling. It would also be useful in overtaking offenders who are on foot and even carry the bicycle around when traveling upon many different modes of transport, The Tribune reported. Additionally It would not only save the taxpayer’s money but also help meet the green objectives of Punjab Police.
The authorities have roped in Hero cycles for this purpose. “It makes perfect sense for a public agency as important and responsible for our safety as the Punjab Police to use electric vehicles for patrol duty in certain situations. E-bikes can help keep our streets safe by improving police presence at trouble spots,” Director Hero Cycles Abhishek Munjal told the daily.
Earlier this year, the state police was awarded FICCI Smart Policing Award for undertaking a host of trailblazing measures which helped in nabbing over 100 criminals. Punjab Police was chosen from a list of 200 nominations that came from various CAPFs & State Police Forces across India.
