Rajiv Gandhi took over as the Prime Minister of India soon after his mother and former PM Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards. He was the youngest Prime Minister of India at 40. However, it is believed that he never intended to join politics and was instead passionate about flying. In fact, he passed the entrance examination to the Delhi Flying Club and went to the obtain a commercial pilot’s licence.
He married Sonia Gandhi who is currently the president of the Congress party and had two children, Priyanka and Rahul. Rajiv Gandhi served as the Prime Minister of the country from 1984 to 1989. The day is also celebrated as Sadbhavna Diwas. He was assassinated during a public meeting in Sri Perumbudur near Madras in 1991. A woman approached him to greet and detonated a bomb tugged under her dress killing Rajiv Gandhi on the spot.
