Ram Nath Kovind is the 14th President of India; Narendra Modi, Mamata Banerjee, others congratulate him

Ram Nath Kovind has won the Presidential polls and has defeated opposition candidate Meira Kumar with a huge margin of votes

NDA’s presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind has won the presidential polls defeating opposition candidate Meira Kumar and is all set to be the 14th President of India. Winning with a massive margin, Kovind has secured 2930 votes with the value of 7,02,044 and Meira Kumar secured 1,844 votes with the value of 3,67,314. With this, Ram Nath Kovind has become the second Dalit, after KR Narayanan, to have been elected as the President of India.

BJP leaders across the states including Bihar and Rajasthan are celebrating Kovind’s win. While the results were declared today, the elections for outgoing President Pranab Mukherjee’s successor was held on July 17. Ram Nath Kovind is now gearing up to swear-in as the President on July 25.

Most MP’s from Gujarat, Assam, Goa, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh have reportedly voted in Ram Nath Kovind’s favour. “I am not upset, why should I be upset? I am a fighter, I fought for the belief and faith of the majority of my countrymen and women,” Meira Kumar said after the results were announced. Kovind who was the ex Governor of Bihar, has been a BJP MP in the Rajya Sabha.

Ram Nath Kovind has also served as the national spokesperson for the saffron party. He has served as the member of the board of management of the BR Ambedkar University in Lucknow and has worked extensively for development in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
