Days after clashes broke out between Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists and All India Student Association (AISA) supporters on the North Campus of Delhi University, BJP backed student organisation suspended two of its activists.
According to reports, the two activists were suspended after Delhi Police arrested them for allegedly attacking two AISA supporters on the North Campus of Delhi University on February 22.
Soon after suspending them, ABVP issued a statement saying that they were against any kind of attack and want to maintain a violence-free atmosphere in the campus.
“After the incident, the members of ABVP held a meeting and decided to suspend two members Prashant Mishra and Vinayak Sharma from the primary membership for violating rules and indulging in violence,” ABVP media convener Saket Bahuguna said in a statement. It also added that they would conduct an internal inquiry and decide the further course of action.
They have been booked under IPC sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) and arrested, said a senior police officer. Police are trying to identify the other students who were involved in the alleged attack on the AISA activists.
On February 28, ‘ABVP go back go back’—slogans were heard over and over again across the North Campus of the DU after students and faculty from various colleges took out a protest march against the violence by the alleged ABVP activists at Ramjas college a few days back.
Ramjas college had last week witnessed large-scale violence between members of the AISA and the ABVP. The genesis of the clash was an invite to JNU students Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid to address a seminar on ‘Culture of Protests’, which was withdrawn by the college authorities following opposition by ABVP.
