Raveena Tandon points out contradictory statements in her daughter's history textbooks

The chapter which Raveena Tandon was referring to was on Qutbuddin Aibak and the Mumluk dynasty

History lessons being taught to children in schools have often come under criticism by historians and well as by parents. This time, actor Raveena Tandon raised a pertinent point stating how contradictory statements have been written in history books. The actor tweeted an image of a page from the history book of her daughter saying: “Doing history with the daughter..contradictory statements taught. “Treated Hindus well, however broke/looted Hindu temples to build mosques”.

The chapter which she was referring to was on Qutbuddin Aibak and the Mumluk dynasty. The text in the book according to the image posted says that Qutbuddin “was known as ‘lakhbash’ or giver of lakhs. He treated Hindus well. However, he broke several ancient temples to collect wealth and material required to build mosques and other monuments.”

She also questioned that whether treating Hindus well means “we should be thankful that Aibak just didn’t massacre Hindus, but only looted and tore down our culture.”

After Raveena tweeted out the image of the history book, several social media users also shared pictures and details about Qutbuddin Aibak from the books they owned.

While some also said that one can’t comment on whether temples were broken by him or were already destroyed when Qutbuddin came to Delhi.

Twitter also got together to reflect on how education system in India needs a revamp

Time and again, there has been criticism that Indian history has been written keeping Delhi or northern India into perspective. Questions have often been raised on how there is not much information on empires in Southern India. It has also been said that history has been written on little or no evidence.
