Every year on 26 January, Republic Day is celebrated in India, on this day in 1950 the largest democracy in the world was created. Various events in the national capital as well as in the other parts of the country are organised.
It all started in 1946, when for the smooth transition of power from Britain to India, the British government sent the Cabinet mission to India to talk about the matter with the leaders in India. 292 representatives were selected, from the guidelines laid by the cabinet mission and the constituent assembly was formed, The list of the representatives include Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sarojini Naidu, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad,
The formed constituent assembly met for the first time on December 9 the same year in the Parliament House’s Constitution Hall. In the first meeting that happened there were 207 members present who discussed on various points with the aim of making a draft that would play a crucial role for the government of India after the country gets independence.
After this constituent assembly held 11 more meetings for over 165 days that lasted till 1949, three years after the first meeting. In the same year, on Decemeber 9, 1947 after much discussion the constituent assembly made the draft which got acceptance and after more than a month on January 26, 1950 the Constitution of India came in to action. It was the day when the Constitution of India was introduced, which was prepared by the drafiting committee headed by B.R Ambedkar and it replaced the existing Government of India Act,1935.
As it is the day that the constitution of India came into action therefore every year January 26 is celebrated as the Republic Day of India. The constitution of India was formed by taking into account the diversity of the country that includes regional tribes, ethnic communities and various religions therefore making India a soverign democratic republic.
