RIP India’s Grand Old Comedian Kader Khan

He died at the age of 81 at a hospital in Canada.

Veteran Bollywood actor and screenwriter Kader Khan passed away on Tuesday at the age of 81. Khan, who was battling Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, a degenerative disease for the past few months, died at a hospital in Canada. In an illustrious career spanning over 45 years, Kader Khan acted in over 300 film and wrote for 250 films.

Born in Kabul, he made his acting debut in 1973 with superstar Rajesh Khanna in the film Daag. In the 70s & 80s, Khan worked as a screenwriter for notable directors such Prakash Mehra & Manmohan Desai. Some of his best written films include Amar Akbar Anthony, Coolie, Parvarish, Sharaabi.  In the 90s, he became known for his comic roles when he collaborated withdirector David Dhawan and actor Govinda. The trio delivered many successful comedy hits which include Coolie No 1, Haseena Maan Jayegi, Sajan Chale Sasural and Hero No 1. He is survived by his wife Hajra, son Sarfaraz, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. Sarfaraz, who is also an actor, said that his last rites will take place in Canada.

As the news of death broke, many film from the film industry took to Twitter to express their condolences.
