In a shocking incident, at least 10 people were injured after a portion of Chennai’s Anna Salai road caved in today. The road reportedly caved in because of Metro construction work nearby. A state-run bus and a private car got caught in the cave-in following which 25 people were rescued. The injured have been taken to a local hospital.
According to a Times of India report, the Anna Square-Vadapalani bus (25G) had stopped at the bus stop when the driver felt some movement and thought that it was a tyre puncture. However, when he peeped out, he saw the road caving in. Acting swiftly, the driver asked the passengers to get down after they got down, the bus started to sink.
A report in The New Indian Express suggested that no major injuries were caused and passengers were taken out of the vehicles. Following the incident, the cops have cordoned off the area and are in the process of recovering the bus and car.
Sudden caving in of roads has often been reported since the construction of the underground Metrorail stretch began along this arterial road. While about a dozen of such incidents have occurred over the years, no major casualties have been reported.
Earlier on March 30, a portion of the same Anna Salai road had caved in. A 10-foot stretch on Poonamallee High Road, another arterial road in Chennai caved in in June 2015 owing to tunnelling work for the Chennai Metro Rail. The cave-in even witnessed a car getting stuck in the crater. However, the occupants in the vehicle escaped unhurt.
