Ruling AIADMK reclaims the 'two leaves' symbol and Tweeps' reaction will leave you in splits

EC has awarded the two leaves symbol to the unified faction of AIADMK led by Tamil Nadu CM Edapaddi K Palaniswamy and O Panneerselvam

After dawdling the decision over the AIADMK symbol row for months, the Election of India (EC) on Thursday, November 23, decided to allot the ‘two leaves’ symbol to the faction of the party led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam.

The news was confirmed by Panneerselvam, who shared an image of the EC’s order on Twitter. Check out his tweet here:

Background

The power tussle between the two factions of AIADMK, each led by Palaniswami and Sasikala, broke out when the former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa passed away on December 5 last year after prolonged illness. The commission froze the symbol on March 22 this year asking both the factions to furnish affidavits in their support by April 15. However, this deadline was extended to June 16 on request by both the factions.

Following reports of power abuse, EC cancelled the by-polls in Jayalalithaa’s RK Nagar area. Later, the Madras High Court directed the EC to decide on the issue oy October 31. EC resumed its hearing on October 6 after Sasikala and Dhinakaran declared their merger. The commission reserved its order on November 8. However, it missed the November 10 deadline set by the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, Tweeps were quite amused with this new update. Here’s what they had to say:
