Aparna Kumar is the first IPS officer to complete the ‘Seven Summit’ challenge. The challenge requires mountaineers to summit the highest peaks of all seven continents.
She scaled Mt Denali in Alaska, USA which stands at 20,310 feet. She started her final climb on June 15 but since the weather was favourable, she finished her climb ten days before her scheduled date. She reportedly climed in -35 degree Celsius and braved winds of up to 80 km/hr. A 2002 batch UP Cadre IPS officer, Kumar is posted at the Northern Frontier Headquarters of ITBP in Dehradun.
In January this year, she became the first woman officer (all-India services) to reach the South Pole. In 2017, she climbed Antarctica’s highest peak, Mount Vinson Massif, after climbing Mount Everest and was accompanied by a 10-member team of mountaineers from various countries.
On the Republic Day, 2016, Aparna was also honoured with the special DGP Commendation Disc for her notable achievements.
Next, she wants to go to the North Pole.
