The Supreme Court has ordered to shift former MP and RJD strongman Mohammad Shahabuddin from Siwan to Tihar jail in New Delhi.
The apex court order came on February 15 after two separate pleas were filed by Asha Ranjan, wife of slain journalist Rajdeo Ranjan and Chandrakeshwar Prasad alias Chanda Babu, whose three sons were murdered allegedly by Sahabuddin and his henchmen.
A bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra ordered that Shahabuddin be transferred from Siwan to Tihar jail in a week.
In its order, the court said that no preferential treatment should be given to the gangster turned politician. Sahabuddin’s trial will now be conducted from Tihar Jail via video-conferencing.
Asha had pleaded to the court that Shahabuddin should be shifted to Tihar jail while Chanda Babu’s petition has sought his transfer to any jail outside Bihar as he influences witnesses and trials of cases against him in Bihar.
Shahabuddin landed in a fresh row in the first week of January this year when his purported selfie inside the jail showing his new look with shaven head and overcoat went viral on social media.
Notorious and known for muscle-flexing, Shahabuddin faces over 36 cases, including murder and kidnapping.
