In an anti-Naxal operation in Bijapur, Chhattisgarh on April 7, a sniffer dog named ‘Cracker’ was martyred in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast. The sniffer dog died on the spot. Whereas, the dog handler Commandant B. Bhanu Prakash Reddy received minor splinter injury in his hand.
A CRPF jawan also received injuries after the IED blasted near Chinna Kodepal area, two kilometres away from Chinnakodepal camp of 170 Battalion.
According to the CRPF officials, trained sniffer dogs rarely get killed this way as they are trained to use its sense of smell to detect substances like explosives (ammonium nitrate) or drugs.
