A 15-year-old boy who is a son of a watchman returned the packet which contained 700-carat diamonds worth Rs 40 lakh to his rightful owner in Surat. Vishal Upadhyay, a student of Class XI was playing cricket at the diamond street on August 15 when he found the bag which had diamonds.
For his honesty, Vishal who is a resident of Jadakhadi in Mahidhapura was felicitated with a cash prize of Rs 30,000 by Mansukh Savaliya, owner of the diamonds and was given Rs 11,000 by Surat Diamond Association (SDA) president Babu Gujarati on Saturday.
“I am so indebted to the young boy for returning my diamond packet. It would have been a big loss, had I not found the packet. I would have to sell my house to repay my creditors. The boy saved me and my family”, said Mansukh Savaliya. He added that he went through CCTV footage and narrowed down his area of search.
Vishal saw a packet containing diamonds while playing cricket with friends. When he was looking for a ball in the parking area he saw the packet which was tucked beneath a two-wheeler.

“I returned home and kept the packet safely without informing my parents. I thought I would find the rightful owner and return the packet to him. On the third day, the packet owner came looking for the packet. I heard the conversation and immediately followed him. I told him that the packet was with me,” said Vishal.
He plans to use the money that he has got as the reward in his studies. Vishal’s father works as a watchman on a wage of Rs 8,000 and his mother stitches clothes.
