Soon, teachings of Buddha to be part of NCERT curriculum

On the occasion of Buddha Jayanti, Prakash Javadekar said, 'The real aim of education is to prepare a good man'

Soon, the teachings of Gautam Buddha will be part of National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) curriculum. The announcement was made by Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar on Wednesday on the occasion of Buddha Jayanti.

While speaking at the event organised by Ministry of Culture, Javadekar said, ““Bharat ki shiksha ki soch kewal job dene wala ho aur vishay ka gyan de de, yeh shiksha nahi hai (Education provided in India should not just focus on jobs and information on the topic alone). It is a part of education. One part of the education system allows you to know the subject and the other is that you are doing it for employment. But the real aim of education is to prepare a good man”.

In order to make Buddha teachings relevant in today’s time, Javadekar said reworking on the NCERT books has started. Teachers and experts have been asked to examine and give suggestions if they find a need to amend some chapters.  “I want to add that Gautam Buddha’s thoughts, which are thoughts for life, will give aim to the students,” said Javadekar.  S R Bhatt, an eminent scholar of Buddhism was also felicitated in the event.

Meanwhile, Union minister Kiren Rijuju on the occasion of Buddha Jayanti said if India follows teachings of Buddha it can become a world leader. He added that India holds a great place in the world and the world looks up to the country as it is the birthplace of Gautam Buddha.
