Bringing forth the vibrant culture of Northeast, the Assamese Student Association, New Delhi recently organised a cultural extravaganza, ‘Freshtival’ 2016, to accord a warm welcome to the freshers. A spectacular show brought to light not only the colourful tradition of Assam, but also the talent of the students.
Young, lively and free-spirited are the students coming all the way from Assam for higher education in some of the esteemed colleges under the Delhi University.
In an effort to bring the students closer and make them feel at ease away from home, All Assamese Student Association (AASA) organised a freshers-cum-social meet, ‘Freshtival’ 2016, which was highly enjoyed by the freshers.
“Being here is incredible, it’s my dream come true to be a part of DU. Right from my childhood I always had planned to pursue my graduation from Delhi university and I m doing it right now. I always had an interest in history. After my graduating, I am planning to pursue a degree in foreign language from JNU. Moreover, being a part of AASA it feels great. We get to meet our own people and work for the interest of our own people here in Delhi,” said Dawri Deka a student of Gargi College, Delhi University.
Further, Aatri Deuri, a student of Kamla Nehru College who is presently pursuing her degree in Journalism, said,” Being in Delhi University is one of the most prestigious things in entire India and I am very proud to be a part of it. It was really tough for me to get into a good college. But yes, I did it.”
To encourage and motivate the youths, an interactive session was held during the event, giving them a platform to share their views and opinions.
Later, as a part of a tribute to the legendary singer Dr Bhupen Hazarika, the youngsters performed the famous Assamese song ‘JILIKABO LUITOR PAAR’.
Highlighting the vibrant and vivid tradition of Assam, the youths performed various cultural dances that enthralled the audience. People from all walks of life gathered to witness the cultural extravaganza.
Young girls performed to the beat of the famous Bihu dance that left the audience spellbound.
Prior to that, the AASA also felicitated some unsung heroes from all forms of art, be it music, films or literature, and presented a life time achievement award to late Amulya Kakoti, one of Assam’s most talented actors who died a few years ago without even hogging the limelight. The award was received by his wife and daughter.
The event was brought to life by Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, who performed some of his famous hits including the super hit ‘Ya Ali’ from the Bollywood movie Gangster.
Speaking to ANI, renowned singer Zubeen Garg said “I have two to three films in my hand and I am more into film making right now. I have two Hindi films in my mind and besides singing now I am planning to direct and produce films as well.”
Such a venture by the youngsters will go a long way in bringing youths of Northeast closer to work for the welfare of the society as well as for the nation.
The event was graced by TP Khaund, Principal Advisor to Govt. of Mizoram, as the chief guest of the evening.
