Subhash Chandra Bose's closest aide Nizamuddin dies at 116, PM Modi pays tribute

In 2016, Nizamuddin came into the limelight when he opened a bank account at an age of 116 years.

Neta Ji Subhash Chandra Bose’s driver Nizamuddin passed away at the age of 116 on February 6 at Azamgarh. Nizamuddin, who was also known as Saifuddin, was Neta Ji’s closest aide and a prominent member of his Azad Hind Fauj during the freedom struggle.

His funeral held in Azamgarh’s Dhakwa village in Mubarakpur area where he died after a prolonged illness.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled Nizamuddin’s death and tweeted, “Tributes to Subhas Babu’s close associate, Colonel Nizamuddin. I recall my meeting with him. His demise is saddening.”

“We will always remember the idealism, courage, and patriotism of Colonel Nizamuddin, which added strength to our freedom struggle,” the Prime Minister said.

Born in 1901, Colonel Nizamuddin served as a driver-cum-guard of Bose after the INA was formed. He accompanied Bose when he went to meet Adolf Hitler to seek help to secure freedom for India. He was also with Neta Ji during his trips to Japan, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. In 2016, Nizamuddin came into the limelight when he opened a bank account at an age of 116 years.

He is survived by his 107-year-old wife Ajbunisa, daughter Habibunnisa (85) and sons Akhtar Ali (72), Anwar Ali (65) and Sheikh Akram (55).
