Supreme Court has asked this mobile phone tower to be shut down! Here is why

A BSNL tower was installed in less than 50 metres from the house where Harish Chand worked as a domestic help in Gwalior’s Dal Bazar area

In one of its kind case, the Supreme Court has ordered to take down a mobile phone tower after a petition was filed claiming that the radiations from the BSNL tower mobile tower has caused him cancer. A bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi and Navin Sinha directed the BSNL to shut down the tower within seven days.

According to the reports published in The Times of India, ‘Harish Chand Tiwari, a 42-year-old, filed a plea in Supreme Court claiming that the electromagnetic radiation from the mobile tower installed illegally on a neighbour’s rooftop in 2002 has afflicted him with cancer.’

A BSNL tower was installed in less than 50 metres from the house where Harish Chand worked as a domestic help in Gwalior’s Dal Bazar area, which afflicted him with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma caused by continuous and prolonged exposure to radiation.

This is the first instance when a tower will be closed on an individual’s petition alleging harmful radiation.

The apex court began hearing the petition on March 18, 2016 and asked to file additional documents to show the harmful effects caused by radiation to humans and animals.

Earlier, many activists and petitioners have alleged that radiation from mushrooming mobile phone towers have caused sparrows, crows and bees to vanish.
