The great Indian sex vs tears debate: Sorry but the peacock's more like a 'typical playboy'

Turns out 'pious' peacock actually has all the qualities of a typical playboy. Where is the 'piousness' Justice Sharma? We've done the research for you

A number of people across the country were left baffled on May 31 after Rajasthan High Court judge Mahesh Chandra Sharma claimed that “Peacocks have pious qualities and do not have sex” due to which the bird has been declared as the national bird of India. Naturally, the next question that popped up in everyone’s mind was how on earth would a peacock reproduce if the bird did not have sex. Of course, he had an answer for that too. Sharma decided to make his last day at work memorable by asserting that a Peahen gets pregnant by not having sex but after it swallowing “tears” of the peacock.

The comment seemed to be just an addition to his bizarre reasons on why cow should be declared as India’s national animal. He affirmed that stricter laws should be enforced to protect the cows from being slaughtered. His comments raked a storm on Twitter and social media users did not refrain from having their own share of fun.

What did Justice Sharma actually say?

After recommending that cow should be declared as the national animal, Sharma went on to explain why the Peacock was declared as the national bird. His explanation:

“Peacock too has a pious quality, let me tell you. Peacock is a lifelong celibate. It never has sex with peahen. Its tears are picked by the peahen to get pregnant and gives birth to peacock or peahen. God Krishna wore peacock feather for this reason. Peacock feather is used by saints and priests and in temples for this reason —its celibacy.”

However, where does Justice Sharma’s intriguing revelation stem from?

It is a myth that a Peahen gets attracted to the Peacock when he spreads his feathers and starts dancing during which tears come out of Peacock’s eyes. The Peahen gets pregnant by swallowing the tears of the peacock. Many actually believe in it, just like Justice Sharma fell prey to it.

Here’s a reality check, Justice Sharma. Peacocks do have sex. Peahen does not reproduce by peacock’s tears.

Like any other bird, Peacock needs to mate to reproduce. Turns out, Quora users had started a conversation over whether Peahens can get pregnant by drinking tears of a Peacock existed much before Justice Sharma decided to make the statement in public.

And not only is peacock not asexual, it’s also polygamous, meaning it has multiple partners.

It apparently makes fake mating sound to score over other suitors to attract peahens. It’s a con master.

Further, it makes no contribution in bringing up its kids and all the responsibility of looking after the peafowl is left to a peahen.
