Think getting Vijay Mallya back is easy? 5 high profile people India failed to get extradited

Vijay Mallya was arrested and granted bail within hours in London. However, he is not the only person India is finding difficult to extradite

Just hours after liquor baron Vijay Mallya was arrested in London almost a year after he fled India, the Westminster court released him on a bail. Some wasted no time in hailing the central government’s effectiveness and termed it as the first step towards the extradition of the business tycoon. However, before the government could completely take the credit for his arrest, Mallya was granted bail.

Scotland Yard police released a statement saying that he was arrested as per the orders from the Indian authorities. Mallya who is accused of defaulting on loans worth Rs 9,000 crore, even took a dig at the media minutes after the reports of him being granted a bail surfaced. “Usual Indian media hype. Extradition hearing in Court started today as expected,” he tweeted. But if you think it is only Mallya that the government is finding difficult to bring back, that really is not the case. There have been a number of high-profile people in the past who India failed to get extradited.

Lalit Modi

Soon after Mallya’s arrest, people started questioning if Lalit Modi was the next to be arrested. Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi was expelled from the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) in 2010 on 22 charges that included money laundering, betting, bid rigging, not following an appropriate process, accepting kickbacks on broadcast deals etc. Modi wasted no time and fled India along with his family to London. Congress even accused the BJP government for allegedly helping Modi to flee the country.

Ravi Shankaran

Ravi Shankaran is the prime accused and kingpin of the Navy War Room leak case which is one of India’s biggest military espionage cases. Ravi Shankaran fled India in 2006 is accused of stealing and leaking vital and confidential documents from the Navy war room. India has not been able to bring him back from UK even after revoking his passport and issuing a red corner notice against him.

Kim Davy

Kim Davy is the key accused in the 21-year-old Purulia arms drop case. The case dates back to 1995 when arms including AK-47 rifles, rocket launchers, ammunitions were dropped from an aircraft in the Purulia district of West Bengal. Davy wasted no time and escaped to Denmark. A High Court in Denmark had also rejected India’s request to extradite him.

Iqbal Mirchi

Popularly known as the close aide of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, Iqbal Mirchi is accused of match-fixing, drug suppliers and mainly one of the mastermind of 1993 Bombay bombings. Despite an extradition treaty with the UK, India failed to get him back. UK turned down India’s extradition request in 1995. He passed away in London after suffering a heart attack in 2013.

Bollywood music director Nadeem Saifi has been accused of conspiring in the murder of music baron Gulshan Kumar who was shot dead in 1997. Nadeem Saifi who was apparently on a vacation in London refused to come back has been in UK since 1997. India did issue a red corner notice and non-bailable arrest warrant but has failed to get him.
