It’s has been long since the co-ed schools were set up in India, with the aim of providing education to both girls and boys together. However due to increase in the lawlessness, a school in West Bengal has decided to have separate classes for boys and girls and the classes will be conducted on different days.
With growing complaints from girl students of harassment by the boys, Barhra High School, a 159-year-old co-ed school, in the Birbhum district of West Bengal have decided to have separate classes for boys and girls and that too on different days. Boys will come to school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, on the other hand, girls will attend the schools from Thursday till Saturday. This decision has been taken for the students of class 11 and class 12.
As per a report in the Hindustan Times, a girl said, “The boys use lewd words at us, shout in class and also use mobile phones even when the teacher is present in class”.
School headmaster Kanchan Adhikari said, “After getting several complaints from the students of classes 11 and 12 that the boys create trouble, we were forced to take the decision of asking them to attend school on separate days”. He also said that the decision taken by the school is not permanent, the school will change its policy if the boys change their attitude.
